The stories of the Artists behind the art of Monster Maker of the Month (3 Part Series)

This past May we were delighted to see over 100 different entries for Monster Maker of the Month! We’d like to share with you the stories of the artist behind the art in this 3 part series. Click here to go to Part One

Brandon Croslin (@bcrozzy on Instagram) was a runner up for May 2019’s Maker of the Month with his piece “Hagatha”.

Monster Makers: How would you describe your art style?

Brandon Croslin: I would have to say my art style is a cross between Realism and Fantasy. I usually focus on creating a character/creature in as realistic fashion as I can. Trying to give each piece as much character and drama as I can.

MM: What/who are some of your inspirations for the art that you create?

BC: Inspiration for me stems back to Predator 1987. That creature has been the fuel for my passion. After realizing Steve Wang was one of the sculptors, I quickly became hooked on his work, following it work ever since.

Along with Steve Wang, many others inspire me. From legends like Rick Baker, John Chambers, Dick Smith, and Stan Winston to others like Jordu Schell, Casey Love, Tim Gore, etc. All of these artists inspire me greatly.

MM: How would you describe the work that you do?

BC: The work I do is creating latex masks/busts. Pieces that can be used for props or to decorate a collection. I do work with resins as well. Sculpting is my passion, so turning it into something others can own is what I love.

MM: Do you have any particular goals with your art?

BC: My ultimate goal in art would be to work for a studio. Behind the scenes helping create fantastic pieces for the world to see. It’s not an easy task by any stretch, but is definitely my biggest motivation. If it didn’t happen, I’d be just as happy as an independent artist, still creating fun stuff.

MM: What are some of your most important art tools? Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?

BC: Best art tools…I’d have to say some of my favorite are my homemade tools. Various ribbon tools and rakes. Several Kemper loops I have to have at all times also.

As for painting, I can’t stop talking up Tim Gores Adhesion Promoter. I’ve talked to Tim so much about it and how fantastic it is. I love that stuff and it’s a must in my arsenal.

MM: Do you have a favorite project that you’ve done so far?

BC: A toss up between the Hagatha latex bust I did, that was submitted in this contest and a custom Predator bio I did with a few other artists. The Hagatha witch/gypsy I did was a favorite among many and I had a blast creating her.

MM: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

BC: Just enjoy what we do. Don’t worry about making money on art. Instead use each piece as a learning tool. Do it because it’s your passion and have fun in every aspect of the process.
